Gallery Walk

From 5-8 this evening is the Iowa City Gallery Walk. Home Ec will be featuring work by Lee Emma Running. "Members of the Old Capitol Quilters' Guild joined me for this two-part class, and we had a lot of fun. We tested fiber reactive dyes, a versatile cold water dye that reacts at the molecular level with natural fibers, so it's very color and light fast and a good choice for home dyers. We tried handpainting and monoprinting. Even Codi jumped in! In June, I hope to do a one session evening class called "paint your own throw pillow fabric" (June 15). I also hope to team up with Codi to do a screenprinting and handpainting class on Saturday June 27 (students will screen print with Codi), and Tuesday, June 30 (students will paint their screenprinted fabric with me). In the future, I'd like to do more "dye basics" sessions, plus soy wax batik, stamping on fabric, low water immersion dyeing for quilters, and fabrics for book artists. I'm open to your suggestions as well. Long ago, when the University of Iowa still taught fiber arts classes, I was a visiting lecturer there, and I've taught at Penland and other places. I've so enjoyed the energy and friendship of Codi and Alisa at Home Ec. May they prosper and also get the occasional day off! Happy making fiber art "making things" to you."

Mama and Baby Owls

Yesterday I spent the day with my friend Grace sewing these super cute owls. We made them for a friend who recently had a baby. Of course we couldn't resist an owl photo shoot after they were finished. I love how the owls are looking at each other! Grace said she would teach an owl making class in July at Home Ec. Hoot Hoot!! Stay tuned for the dates.

This is Buttons. She is one of the cutest dogs on earth. Button's person, Merit, brought her in to show us the sweet needle felted jacket she made to keep Buttons warm this winter.

Swing with style in this Fall jacket. Make it out of our wool or corduroy fabric using the Betsy Ross Reto Jacket pattern. You can choose to line the whole thing or simply put in facings out of complimentary cotton.

SCRAP RUGS: INSPIRED BY FOLK ART CUT PAPER AND STAINED GLASS
Saturday, November 1
Sunday, November 9
2 – 4 PM
Students will be asked to bring two pieces of felt (available at Home Ec.) that are equal in size. They will learn how to use paper cutting techniques to create a beautiful and intricate overlay. On the bottom layer they will collage pieces of old sweaters, blankets, sentimental clothing, scraps (whatever they bring from home) and fabric to create the under layer. The result will look like a stained glass window.
$45 + supplies

On Friday, October 17th from 6-8 kids can come to Home Ec. Workshop and create a woven nest and a bird. Local artist Katie Parry will be teaching the workshop.

Parents, go out to dinner while your kids attend this fun workshop!

$25, all supplies included
